NGL made "send me anonymous messages" links a story staple, and it's still the name most people know. MirrorBox does the same core job, an anonymous link for your story or bio, but makes different choices about pricing, hints and what people can send.
NOTE
Quick answer: Pick MirrorBox if you want a free link with more than plain text (songs, "describe me in 3 words", memories, vibe checks), no paid "who sent this" hints, and a chat where senders can choose to reveal themselves. Pick NGL only if you specifically want the app your friends already recognise and you're 18 or older.

Pricing: free vs paying for hints#
NGL is free to send and receive, but its subscription has always centred on "hints" about who sent a message. In July 2024 the FTC and the Los Angeles District Attorney settled with NGL for $5 million. The FTC said NGL sent users fake, computer-generated questions to push them toward that subscription, and that the hints were vague rather than real names (FTC complaint coverage, TechCrunch).
MirrorBox doesn't sell hints at all. Everything you need to receive and answer messages is free: your link, every message type, story replies, anonymous chat, walls and every safety tool. MirrorBox+ is optional and only adds extras like page themes, insights, the full friends' portrait and premium story templates.
"Who sent this?": hints vs a reveal the sender chooses#
This is the biggest difference.
- NGL: you can pay for hints like a phone type or rough location. They describe thousands of people, so they rarely tell you anything.
- MirrorBox: you can't buy a sender's identity. Instead, you can start a chat from any message. The sender stays anonymous, and they get a button to reveal who they are whenever they want. If you want to know more about whether you can ever see who sent an anonymous message, we wrote a whole guide on it.
Message types: one box vs six#
NGL is built around one thing: a text question. That works, but a blank box gets fewer replies than a specific prompt.
MirrorBox lets you turn on the types you want:
- anonymous notes and questions,
- songs: friends search for a track or type it in, and can add a link from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or SoundCloud (40 songs people send),
- "describe me in 3 words" cards, which build a portrait of how your friends see you,
- memories and vibe checks.
What ends up public#
Both apps keep messages private until you answer. On MirrorBox, every message lands in your private inbox first, and nothing appears on your page unless you pin it or publish an answer. You can also answer on your Instagram story and keep the reply off your page entirely.
Safety and age rules#
Under its FTC settlement, NGL must age-gate the app and may not offer it to anyone under 18 (NBC News).
MirrorBox's minimum age is 13. Accounts need a birth month and year, optional emails are off for anyone under 18, and every account gets:
- spam and hate filters, on by default,
- block, report and mute in one tap, even for anonymous senders,
- muted words, so certain messages never reach you,
- control over who can message you, including signed-in people only,
- pause your inbox whenever you need a break.
The full rules are in our community guidelines.
Which one should you pick?#
- Choose MirrorBox if you want it free, want more than text questions, want to chat back with senders, or you're under 18.
- Choose NGL if you're 18+ and only want a plain question box that your followers already recognise.

Frequently asked questions#
Is MirrorBox better than NGL?#
For most people who want a free anonymous link for their Instagram or TikTok story, yes. MirrorBox is free to use, has six message types instead of one, and never sells "who sent this" hints. NGL is the better-known name, but its paid tier is built around hints about senders.
Does NGL tell you who sent a message?#
No. NGL's paid tier gives hints, not names. In 2024 the FTC said those hints were vague and that NGL sent fake computer-generated questions to push people to pay. On MirrorBox, a sender can choose to reveal themselves in a chat, and nobody can pay to unmask them.
Is MirrorBox free like NGL?#
Yes. Getting a link, receiving every message type, replying on your story, anonymous chat and all safety tools are free. MirrorBox+ is optional and only adds extras like page themes, insights and premium story templates.
Can people under 18 use NGL or MirrorBox?#
Under its 2024 settlement with the FTC, NGL may not offer its app to anyone under 18. MirrorBox's minimum age is 13, accounts need a birth month and year, and optional emails are off for anyone under 18.
Can I switch from NGL to MirrorBox without losing followers?#
Yes. Swap your old ngl.link for your MirrorBox link in your Instagram bio and post a new story with the link sticker. Your followers just tap the new link.
Facts about NGL come from public reporting on the 2024 FTC settlement and were checked on October 18, 2026. Apps change, so check NGL's own listing for its current prices.
